There are only 2000 black rhinos left in the wild and the species is considered as critically endangered by the IUCN. We actively take part in the conservation programme of black rhinos, posing an unique opportunity for you to get involved hands-on. Animals need to be observed and identified regularly, their body condition, behavior and breeding success recorded. For this, we need to track down and find animals on foot on a regular basis in the depth of the bushes.
A reliable estimate of wild animals is invaluable for adequate wildlife management in nature reserves in Africa. We use advanced techniques to estimate animal abundances in Kuzikus reserve including distance sampling on foot, helicopter counts and road counting. We have shown that distance sampling is a reliable and cost-effective method to obtain accurate abundance estimates of wild herding animals in an closed area.
Over 200 species of bird have been spotted in the area. This number is continuously growing with the help of students. Not only do we like to take a record of species, but we also collect data on their song and song variation between sites. Using playback can attract night-active birds and birds rarely seen. Bird point counts applied at different times of the year can serve as early warning signals for environmental changes.
Traditional insect taxonomy based on morphology only is one of the oldest of natural sciences and only a few specialists persist in the world, motivated and determined to identify and discover species after species through the fascination and beauty of insect biodiversity. Arid savanna is home to unique species with new discoveries being made every year. In Kuzikus alone, we have discovered four new species of beetles and bugs in collaboration with the Royal Belgium Institute of Natural Sciences and Museum and Institute of Zoology in Poland. Our local reference collection serves as the basis for biodiversity research on site.
